THAILAND – POLITICS: Thaksin ‘exonerated’ by Thailand’s Constitutional Court

The Constitutional Court dismissed a petition filed against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the Pheu Thai party for allegedly undermining the constitutional monarchy.

The lawyer who filed the petition, Teerayut Suwankasorn, made six accusations that he said were evidence of attempts by Thaksin and Pheu Thai to undermine the constitutional system. However, the court unanimously dismissed five of the charges for lack of evidence, and by a majority of 7 to 2, dismissed the sixth charge on the same grounds.

The five charges unanimously dismissed were:

Thaksin allegedly used Pheu Thai to gain privileges while in detention.

He reportedly ordered Pheu Thai to work with the now-defunct Kadima Party to amend the constitution to its advantage.

Thaksin is said to have influenced the choice of prime minister after Sreeta Thawisin was sacked.

He will force Pheu Thai to exclude the People’s Power Party from the ruling coalition.

Finally, he allegedly imposed his political ideas on Pheu Pheu Thai and translated them into government policy.

A sixth charge, dismissed by a 7-2 vote, related to an agreement between Thaksin and former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen over areas of overlapping territorial claims. Two minority judges found there was enough evidence to justify a thorough investigation.
