Thirty-nine foreigners managed to cross the border into Tak province in Thailand, deceived by false promises of employment opportunities for a Chinese crime syndicate in Myanmar. Thai soldiers came to the rescue on Monday morning.
Thai authorities discovered the men, who hail from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia and Russia, during a routine patrol in the Mae Sot region, which is notorious for transnational crime. According to their testimony, recruiters lured them to Myanmar with false job offers and then forced them to work in fraudulent call centers run by Chinese nationals.
These call centers are often hidden in remote areas and serve as platforms for large-scale fraud. The escape of these 39 people highlights the seriousness of the scourge of online fraud.
Thai authorities are committed to caring for the victims and assisting their return to their countries of origin. The Thai-Myanmar border area has become fertile ground for organized crime.
